What does a three white soldiers look like?
Our scanner checks it as a setup where all of these hold:
- Three up days in a row. The second and third each close higher than the day before, or at most 0.2% lower. A day that closes less than 1% below its open still counts as up.
- The second and third days each open no more than 5% below the previous day's open and no more than 5% above the previous day's close, so small gaps are allowed.
- Wick size isn't a requirement.
- A prior downtrend isn't required.
How reliable is the three white soldiers pattern?
In our most recent backtest (March – September 2026, out-of-sample), 63.0% of the 4,123 highest-scoring three white soldiers setups, out of 43,694 studied, were trading higher two weeks later.
How are entry, stop and target set?
Every pick comes with an entry zone, price targets and a stop. The targets come from how far past three white soldiers setups actually moved, not from a textbook projection of the pattern's height. The stop scales with the stock's own average daily range, so a volatile stock gets a wider stop than a quiet one.
How is it different from a bullish engulfing?
Both are bullish candlestick reversals, but three white soldiers is three consecutive up candles, while a bullish engulfing is a single up candle that engulfs the prior down candle.
